Our treasurer, Roman
Yereniuk, has been appointed Acting Director, Centre for Ukrainian
Canadian Studies. As a result, he will not continue as an officer of CUPE
3909. We wish him success in his new position and many thanks for his ongoing
service to the Local. ____________________ Time to look back over the past
year: (click a month) Where does the money go?
Lots of it landed here. The evidence is mounting against Public-Private
Partnerships (P3s) and yet the myths persist. We have a new Vice President (TAs, graders,
markers, student-instructors): Kenneth Adebayo was appointed by the Executive Board at
its last meeting to fill the position left vacant when Jason Bland finished his
doctoral studies. Kenneth, who is a graduate student in physics, has had a keen
interest in our local's activities for some time and is a welcome addition. His
appointment will be confirmed by the membership at the Fall General Membership
Meeting. Negotiations have begun on the sessional
lecturers' wage re-opener. The Unit 2 contract, which ends next year on
August 31, 2008, has a proviso that re-opens negotiations on salaries payable

exchanged and discussed initial proposals.MORE National Day of Mourning for workers killed

"The society which scorns excellence in
plumbing because plumbing is a humble activity, and tolerates shoddiness in
philosophy because philosophy is an exalted activity, will have neither good
plumbing nor good philosophy. Neither its pipes nor its theories will hold
water."
John W. Gardner
"With all their faults, trade unions have done
more for humanity than any other organization of men that ever existed. They
have done more for decency, for honesty, for education, for the betterment of
the race, for the developing of character in men, than any other association
of men."
Clarence
Darrow
"Labor is prior to, and independent of,
capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if
Labor had not first existed. Labor is superior to capital, and deserves much
the higher consideration."
Abraham
Lincoln
"The mother of revolution and crime is
poverty."
Aristotle
"Capital is dead labor, which, vampire-like, lives only by sucking living labor, and lives the more, the more labor it sucks."
"Sell a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach a
man how to fish, you ruin a wonderful business opportunity."
Karl Marx (1818 - 1883)
"If liberty and equality, as is thought by
some, are chiefly to be found in democracy, they will be best attained when
all persons alike share in the government to the utmost."
Aristotle (384

committed citizens can change the world, indeed it is the only thing that ever
has."
