Our treasurer, Roman Yereniuk, has been appointed Acting Director, Centre for Ukrainian Canadian Studies. As a result, he will not continue as an officer of CUPE 3909. We wish him success in his new position and many thanks for his ongoing service to the Local.

We have a new Vice President (TAs, graders, markers, student-instructors): Kenneth Adebayo was appointed by the Executive Board at its last meeting to fill the position left vacant when Jason Bland finished his doctoral studies. Kenneth, who is a graduate student in physics, has had a keen interest in our local's activities for some time and is a welcome addition. His appointment will be confirmed by the membership at the Fall General Membership Meeting.

Negotiations have begun on the sessional lecturers' wage re-opener. The Unit 2 contract, which ends next year on August 31, 2008, has a proviso that re-opens negotiations on salaries payable for the final year. We had our first meeting on Friday April 27, 2007 and exchanged and discussed initial proposals.MORE

Stipulations for Retro-Pay. Many Sessionals have contacted the office in the past couple of days reporting they haven't received retro-pay. If you make over the minimum stipend you may not be eligible for retro-pay.MORE

A New Collective Agreement has been Ratified. After a long and difficult round of negotiations a new collective agreement between Sessional Instructors and the University has been ratified.MORE

CUPE 3909 AGM brings a new Executive Committee. All Executive positions were acclaimed at our AGM on Wednesday with the exception of Treasurer, bringing in an almost completely new executive, though one with considerable union experience. MORE

Strike? The CUPE 3909 Unit II Bargaining Team is set to meet with the University on Thursday, 2 March 2006 to try to reach a tentative agreement following the local's strike vote of February 8th and 9th. MORE

The CUPE 3909 Executive endorses the Graduates for Progressive Action candidates in the upcoming Graduate Students' Association elections. Recognizing the crucial need for support between our local and campus student organizations, the Executive of CUPE 3909 unanimously decided to encourage our graduate student members to vote for this slate. The University of Manitoba Graduate Students' Association Council supports Sessionals. A motion from Department of History Councilor Matt McLean, a member of CUPE 3909 Unit I, was passed unanimously by the GSA Council at their February 20th meeting. The motion pledged the GSA's support for CUPE 3909 during the local's negotiations with the University to improve the Sessional's Collective Agreement. MORE

Unit II Bargaining Team receives overwhelming strike mandate. The vast majority of Unit II voters rejected the University of Manitoba's final offer and authorized job action on Wednesday and Thursday of last week. MORE
